What Slide Size Should You Use? 16:9, 4:3, and When It Matters
Slide size is the one decision you cannot cleanly undo halfway through a deck. Here is how to pick correctly the first time, and what to do when the room does not match.
Slide dimensions feel like a setting you can change later. They are not. Resizing a finished deck reflows every text box, stretches every image and moves every manually positioned element, and the damage is spread across every slide rather than concentrated somewhere you can see it. This is the one decision worth getting right before you build anything.
The short answer
Use 16:9. It has been the PowerPoint default since 2013, it matches virtually every laptop, monitor, TV and video-call window made in the last decade, and it is what our templates ship as.
The useful question is not "which is better" but "what will this actually be displayed on", and for most decks in 2026 the honest answer is: a laptop screen, or a shared window in a video call. Both are 16:9.
When 4:3 is still the right call
Two situations genuinely call for the older shape.
**Fixed projectors in older rooms.** Plenty of lecture theatres, community centres and hotel function rooms still run 4:3 projectors. Feed them a 16:9 deck and you get letterboxing — black bands top and bottom, and your slide rendered smaller than the screen it is on. If you are presenting somewhere you have not seen, ask.
**Printed handouts.** A 4:3 slide maps far more comfortably onto a portrait sheet of A4 or Letter. If the deck's real destination is a printed leave-behind rather than a screen, the older ratio wastes less paper.
Outside those cases, 16:9 wins, and Microsoft documents how to change slide size and aspect ratio if you need to switch.
What actually happens when you resize
Changing dimensions mid-project is where decks get destroyed, and it is worth understanding why so you can predict the damage.
PowerPoint offers two options when you resize: **Maximize** and **Ensure Fit**.
- **Maximize** keeps content at its current scale and lets it run past the new slide edge. Anything near a margin gets clipped.
- **Ensure Fit** scales content down so everything stays inside the slide. Nothing is lost, but your type scale shrinks — a 24pt body suddenly renders at 18pt, and the careful relationship between heading and body sizes compresses.
Neither is a clean conversion, because neither can re-make layout decisions on your behalf. Images keep their aspect ratio and so no longer align to the grid they were placed on. Text boxes keep their width and so wrap differently. Grouped objects scale as units and drift apart from ungrouped neighbours.
If you must convert a finished deck, budget time to walk every slide afterwards. There is no version of this that is automatic.
Custom sizes, and when they are worth it
PowerPoint will accept arbitrary dimensions, which is occasionally the correct answer:
- **Social graphics** — a 1080×1080 square deck is a legitimate way to build carousel posts if PowerPoint is the tool you know.
- **Posters and printed one-pagers** — set the slide to the physical paper size (A3, A1) and design at true scale rather than guessing.
- **Ultra-wide conference screens** — some venues run 21:9. Rare, and worth confirming rather than assuming.
The trap is picking a custom size for a deck that will *also* be shown normally. A file built at 21:9 letterboxes badly on a 16:9 laptop, and now you own two versions.
The accessibility angle people miss
Aspect ratio interacts with legibility in a way that is easy to overlook. A 16:9 slide is wider and shorter than a 4:3 one, which means a full-width line of text holds more characters. Long measure is harder to read, particularly from a distance or for anyone with a reading difficulty.
The W3C's guidance on making presentations accessible is worth reading in full, but the practical takeaway for layout is simple: do not let body text run the entire width of a 16:9 slide. Constrain it to roughly two-thirds, or split into columns. The extra width is better spent on margins and on images than on longer lines.
A workable default
If you want one rule that covers most situations:
- Build at **16:9**, because that is what the deck will almost certainly be shown on.
- Keep important content away from the outer 5% of the slide, so letterboxing or a mismatched projector clips margin rather than meaning.
- Constrain body text to about two-thirds of the slide width.
- If you know the room is 4:3, build at 4:3 from the start rather than converting later.
- If the deck must work in both, export a PDF at each size rather than maintaining two editable files.
